So all of those sewing people out there who say altering kids clothing is easy, are full of it! Its a pain in the butt! Maybe its just me though! I usually don't bother trying to make jeans into shorts because I have issues with clothes looking homemade. I know that makes me sound snotty but I can't help it! But after I saw a post here from Make it and Love it, I thought I would try.
My 4 year old has a ton of long sleeve shirts that still fit him. So I decided to cut off the sleeves. This was actually pretty easy. I took one of his shirts that already has short sleeves and just held it up to these ones. Added about 1 1/2 inches and then cut them off. Next I folded them under once and then sewed two seams close together. They turned out pretty good plus while he is wearing them I am sure that he will be moving around so much that people won't notice the un-even seams.
The pants into shorts proved to be more difficult! First off, if they aren't straight leg jeans they end up bunching while I sew them so they have little wrinkles in them. I am sure I said a few words in the process that I shouldn't have. The corduroys turned out easy and great because they were perfectly straight legged plus they didn't have holes in them yet. Cut them off about 3 inches longer than you want them to end up. Fold them under once, and then again and sew two seams next to each other. The fabric ends up pretty thick which I think was part of the problem but I like the more finished look of them. His jeans didn't turn out as well. I used a darker thread that was a little to dark, plus they had holes in them so they still look pretty worn. Oh well! I had some of my babies clothes to fix too but none of them worked out! They just bunched like crazy and were a little too tight to loop around my sewing machine so, I gave up! If any of you have better tips for me please fill me in! Thanks for reading! Have a great Memorial weekend!
